As a Communication Specialist, you will assist the communications team in providing services to internal and external clients including writing and editing communications materials. Primary duties include:
- Draft and edit content for different mediums and channels, including internal and external websites, speaking notes, presentations and social media.
- Determine and implement appropriate messaging, audiences, tactics and channels to achieve client communication objectives for internal and external strategies and plans. Organize special events and meetings such as booking facilities and creating agendas and related materials.
- Collect and summarize information and data by conducting environmental scanning and researching industry trends.
- Develop and distribute news releases ensuring the appropriate spokespersons are prepared for any interviews.
- Answer media calls and help coordinate responses on behalf of the Calgary Police Service (CPS).
- Analyze and distribution media clippings.
Qualifications
- A degree in communications, journalism, public relations or a related field.
- A minimum of 1 year related experience, including media relations and strategic communications.
- Proficiency with Canadian Press (CP) Style is required.
- Previous experience in crisis communication is preferred.
- Previous work experience in a police environment is considered an asset.

Working Conditions: Some exposure to graphic and disturbing content contained in police files; responds occasionally to verbally aggressive members of the public on the phone while performing media relations duties. Occasional requirement to be deployed on scene to critical incidents and events outside the office. In some cases, long periods of standing and/or walking, movement of equipment to locations as required as well as field work in a variety of environments.
Pre-employment Requirements
- An enhanced security clearance will be conducted.
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications. Education obtained from out of country must have or be able to obtain, an Education Credential Assessment (ECA) for confirmation of equivalent credentials.

Compensation: Pay Grade 8 $39.00 - 52.14 per hour
Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week.
Days of work: This position works a 4-day compressed work week.
Location: 5111 47 Street N.E.
