Job Summary

The Unit Assistant ensures clear concise communication and facilitates the flow of information with other facilities, the health care team, visitors, family members and patients. As part of a multidisciplinary team the Unit Assistant provides supportive service to patients, nursing staff and physicians and works in cooperation with other departments with the hospital as well as other nursing units.

Education/Experience

Successful completion of a high school diploma or recognized equivalent Office Administration Certificate preferred. One (1) year experience in within a healthcare setting preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology required. Experience with order entry/Meditech an asset.

Skills/Abilities

Demonstrated basic computer literacy with Microsoft Office experience (Word, Outlook, Excel). Accurate keyboarding skills (minimum 30 wpm). Proven ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written English instructions. Demonstrates proficiency in written and verbal communications skills including excellent telephone etiquette. Demonstrated commitment to customer service and teamwork. Effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Ability to prioritize workloads and manage stressful work environments. Demonstrated ability to work independently and willingness to be flexible to meet department needs. Ability to meet the physical demands of the role. Demonstrated commitment to, and understanding of the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion. Demonstrated appreciation and respect for protocol, professionalism and confidentiality. Responsibilities

Answer/direct phone lines incoming to nursing station. Ensure medical records, laboratory reports and other patient records are obtained. Complete appropriate requisition for testing. Communicate with physician to clarify orders prior to processing. Accurately document physician orders in patient care plan. Enter appropriate referrals orders. Fill out requisitions and forward to appropriate hospital or doctor’s office. Accurate documentation on patient care plans. Obtain appropriate consents as required for tests. All administration associated with scheduling ambulance transfers. Order supplies; photocopy and fax; prepare and maintain charts and some patient registrations duties as required. Assist with the orientation of new Unit Assistants. Supports patient safety culture by ensuring work completed recognizes the safety of the patients. Works in a safe manner and promotes health and safety in the workplace. Participates in quality improvement activities. Adheres to departmental and legislated health and safety standards. Communicates issues and concerns to the Director. Attends and participates in staff meetings. Attends and completes hospital/team training. Assists in the orientation/preceptorship of new staff members and students. Performs other duties consistent with job classification, as required.

HOURS OF WORK: In order to provide the necessary patient care, our operations run 24/7. There is the expectation that you are available to work weekdays, weekends and all shifts (days, nights, 12 hour shifts).
