The Forensic Psychiatry Program works toward restoring and maintaining the mental health and well-being of mentally disordered adult offenders while managing risk as mandated by the Criminal Code of Canada and ordered by the Ontario Review Board. This multi-disciplinary team includes nursing and allied health professionals working together to provide a wide range of assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services. In this capacity, the Forensic Psychiatry Program provides: clinical, court-ordered risk and medico-legal assessments, inpatient treatments, and outpatient treatment and community reintegration services/support.

Qualifications

· Master’s degree in a regulated health profession ( ie Social Work, Nursing, Psychology) is preferred; other relevant and related disciplines may be considered. · Membership in a professional regulatory body/college preferred. · 3 to 5 years of related forensic psychiatry experience · Demonstrate knowledge of the Canadian Criminal Code and Mental Health Act. · Demonstrate knowledge of the interface of the Forensic Psychiatry Program with the court, police, and correctional systems with an ability to develop working relationships with key personnel in each of these systems is required. · Strong critical thinking, operational planning, verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

· Act as the initial point of contact for information, inquiries, and forensic patient referrals · Liaising with crown attorneys, defence counsels, judges, and correction facility personnel, as well as other provincial forensic programs, community-based clinicians/agencies, family doctors, police, general psychiatric units, and family members · Contribute to assessment of patients ordered to undergo Fitness to Stand Trial assessment as per direction from Psychiatrists · Authorize and coordinate program resources including beds, assessments and consultations as representative of SJHH under the domain of the Regional Forensic Psychiatry Program. · Research institutions that offer requested services not currently offered by SJHH and provides this information to the courts · Monitor and evaluate admissions and patient flow processes within the Forensic Psychiatry Program, including wait times, appropriateness of referrals and admissions, and establishing wait time limits across the service. · Review Provincial Bed Registry data daily · Advise clinical staff of legal status, clinical background, past psychiatric and court history of incoming forensic patients with information available · Educate staff, students, and community partners regarding forensic psychiatry services provided at SJHH.
