About the role

Position Department: Athletics Media Relations Position School: Administration Overview: The Graduate Assistant for Athletics Marketing & Communications provides day-to-day creative, administrative, and gameday support to the full-time athletic communications and marketing staff. Operating in a collaborative team environment, the GA helps execute marketing plans, create digital content, and assist with media relations efforts for RMU’s Division I athletic programs, ensuring a consistent and energetic brand voice for the Colonials. Responsibilities: Content & Communications Support Media Relations Assistance: Support full-time staff by drafting press releases, game previews, post-game recaps, and student-athlete feature stories under staff supervision. Digital Content Creation: Assist in gathering content (photos, short-form video) and scheduling posts across official RMU Athletics social media channels (X, Instagram, TikTok) based on the department's content calendar. Website & Graphic Maintenance: Help update roster pages, schedules, and bios on rmucolonials.com. Assist in designing digital graphics for game days, award announcements, and promotions using Canva or Adobe Creative Suite. Archiving & Clipping: Assist with tracking media coverage, organizing photography files, and maintaining historical records for various sports teams. Gameday & Marketing Operations In-Game Statistics: Assist the official scoring table staff by running stat monitors, inputting secondary data, or distributing box scores to media and coaching staffs. Fan Engagement & Promotions: Help execute on-field or on-court marketing promotions, distribute promotional items, and assist with the setup and teardown of marketing materials at home events. Press Box & Media Support: Help welcome visiting media, coordinate credential distribution, and assist full-time staff with post-game press conference logistics. Minimum Qualifications: Academic & Compliance Must be fully accepted and enrolled in an RMU Graduate Program (such as Sports Management, MBA, or Communications) and maintain required academic standing. Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, Marketing, Communications, or a related field. Commitment to learning and adhering to all NCAA, conference, and University rules and regulations. Skills & Competencies Collaborative Mindset: Ability to take direction well from full-time staff, pivot quickly between different sports tasks, and work effectively within a team. Foundational Tech Skills: Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop or Canva for basic graphic creation. Willingness to learn sports-specific software (like SIDEARM CMS or NCAA Live Stats). Communication Basics: Strong writing and editing skills Sports Knowledge: A strong general knowledge of and passion for collegiate sports and fan engagement.
