Job Summary
The Centre for Asian Canadian Research and Engagement (ACRE) at UBC is committed to nurturing and facilitating community engaged, ethical, culturally appropriate, publicly relevant, interdisciplinary and intersectional research and engagement work to address the historical and ongoing manifestations of anti-Asian racism in society. Funded by the VPRI Grants for Catalyzing Research Clusters, the ACRE Research Engagement Coordinator will support the Centre’s goals to nurture, honour, and expand ethical, reciprocal, and intersectional relationships with diverse Asian Canadian communities to facilitate impactful research and engagement opportunities. Specifically, this role involves managing community relations, community engagement research projects, public-facing events, and community-based student learning experiences for the Centre for Asian Canadian Research and Engagement (ARCE).
In addition to maintaining ongoing relationships with key Asian Canadian community and cultural organizations, the incumbent will also proactively identify and initiate opportunities for potential collaboration. With the guidance of ACRE ACAM Program Development & Research Manager, the incumbent will be responsible for managing the workplans of undergraduate and graduate level research assistants who are involved in the Centre’s community-university research projects. Lastly, the incumbent will work closely with ACRE Co-Directors to develop and implement public-facing, community-based events, and will act as the main staff liaison for the ACRE Community Advisory Group (CAG).
This position requires collaboration with existing entities that have worked closely with ACRE, such as the Initiative for Student Teaching and Research in Chinese Canadian Studies (INSTRCC) and the Asian Canadian & Asian Migration studies (ACAM) Program to develop and enhance the Centre’s capacity for reciprocal and meaningful community-university collaboration.
Organizational Status
The Research and Engagement Coordinator reports to the ACRE ACAM Program Development & Research Manager and will receive guidance from the ACRE Co-Directors. The incumbent will collaborate with ACRE ACAM Administrative Coordinator and may supervisor student assistants.
Work Performed
Under the direction of the ACRE Senior Manager, provides overall coordination and management of research activities and initiatives funded by the VPRI Grants for Catalyzing Research Clusters: the Community Archives, Collections, and Heritage Exhibitions (CACHE) research stream; the Browning Asian Canada (BAC) research stream; and ACRE faculty and graduate student engagement initiatives Maintains ongoing relationships with key community and cultural partners engaged through CACHE and BAC research streams to facilitate community-university knowledge co-creation and mobilization projects; Leads the planning, development, and implementation of key CACHE and BAC public events, such as community workshops, public talks, lectures, symposia, etc. In consultation with the ACRE Senior Manager and the Co-Directors, drafts formal documents, such as MOUs, terms of reference, briefs, and impact reports that support community-engaged research and the creation of community-University knowledge mobilization; Develops communications and storytelling initiatives to make visible the value and impact of ACRE’s work, including webpages, newsletters, and social media platforms. Facilitates and participates in research development activities, including grant writing and submissions, drafting letters of support, funding reports, and research ethics applications, etc. Serves as the key staff liaison regarding the ACRE Community Advisory Group (CAG) and the CACHE and BAC research streams, including planning and facilitating regular meetings and check-ins to convene the members involved in each group/stream; Builds, maintains, and enhances data systems for project management and partnership tracking to capture ACRE’s research and engagement processes and outputs; Represents ACRE at meetings, events, and functions pertinent to the Centre’s strategic goals. Stays informed on relevant initiatives and strategies across campus, evaluates feasibility in relation to ACRE, and makes recommendations to the Co-Directors regarding how to best implement any relevant initiatives; In consultation with ACRE ACAM Program Development & Research Manager, oversees budgets and program implementation workflow for VPRI Grants for Catalyzing Research Clusters funded projects and activities, including ensuring all payments and expenditures are documented in alignment with grant and financial policies, preparing progress reports, and ensuring compliance with grant regulations; Leverages the support from VPRI Grants for Catalyzing Research Clusters to identify and initiate potential funding opportunities (SSHRC, MITACS, foundation grants) for the Co-Director's approval, including drafting and developing grant proposals, recommending budget plans, and coordinating other grant application logistics; Performs other duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position works collaboratively with ACRE leadership as well as staff and stakeholders both within the University and in communities. The incumbent’s work is reviewed in terms of effectiveness and achievement of assigned tasks and their objectives. Failure to plan or follow up and poor judgment or errors would have an adverse effect on the reputation of ACRE, the Faculty of Arts, and the University of British Columbia, as well as existing relationships and partnerships held by the Centre. Inability to work in a collaborative and facilitative way will impact adversely on setting and completion of strategic goals. Ability to exercise sound judgment in dealing with administrative matters where there are no established policies, procedures, or guidelines is essential. Failure to act in a professional, tactful manner would have an adverse effect on campus and community relations. The incumbent is expected to display personal initiative and must exercise sound judgement in all administrative areas, have tact and diplomacy, be accurate and maintain confidentiality. The incumbent must be able to act independently in performing defined duties.
Supervision Received
Reports to the ACRE ACAM Program Development and Research Manager and will receive guidance and mentorship from the ACRE Co-Directors.

May supervise student employees; manages consulting contracts and community relationships.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion
Preferred Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Experience working in a large complex post-secondary institution. Articulate in dealing with faculty, students, staff and community stakeholders in a multicultural context. Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively and effectively with external stakeholders, including community groups, researchers, the public sector, and multiple levels of government. Ability to conduct needs analyses, plan, organize, manage, monitor, complete, and evaluate projects within allocated time and resources. Knowledge of local community protocols, i.e., Musqueam Indian Band, Chinatown, is an asset. Technically proficient in Microsoft, Adobe apps, Canva, Workday, WordPress, and social media applications. Ability to exercise diplomacy, tact, and discretions. Ability to manage multiple relationships in a variety of complex contexts. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Nature of the role requires occasional work on evenings and/or weekends for events or meetings.
