About the role

Good Shepherd Ministries is currently accepting applications for a full-time Maintenance Assistant position for 35 hours per week.

Mission Impact Statement/Role Summary Reporting to the Maintenance Operator or Designate, the General Maintenance Worker enhances the dignity and quality of life of Good Shepherd’s clients and visitors through his/her assumed responsibility in property management. This is accomplished through the timeliness and quality of day-to-day repairs, general maintenance and preventative maintenance of all Good Shepherd Ministries' property and equipment.

Through responsible leadership and teamwork, he/she will be responsible for the implementation of the Mission, Vision and Values of Good Shepherd Ministries in its property management services. By welcoming and being respectfully present and hospitable to others, the General Maintenance Worker models the Mission, Vision and Values within the Property Management Department and Good Shepherd Ministries

Job duties and responsibilities for this position include but not limited to: To carry out all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of Good Shepherd Ministries. To provide service in a dignified, respectful and hospitable manner that reflects the Mission, Vision and Values of Good Shepherd Ministries and which integrates non-discrimination/anti-oppression/anti-racism frameworks. To perform all job responsibilities in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Policies and the Occupational Health and Safety Act. To comply with the established rules of operation, procedures, policies and code of conduct. To comply with work scheduling and attendance requirements according to policy and practices. To respond to clients, co-workers and volunteers in a hospitable, respectful and professional manner. An ability to appreciate the complexity and demands of ‘hard to serve’ individuals from diverse backgrounds. To carry out day to day preventative maintenance and timely repairs of all Good Shepherd Ministries property and equipment. To be responsible to receive work orders and to satisfy their requirements as directed by the Maintenance Operator To complete and record Fire and Safety inspections and carry out all necessary safety system repairs as required by the Maintenance Operator To assist the Maintenance Operator to conduct monthly fire drills and co-workers’ de-brief and take responsibility for this as needed. To maintain the property’s structure and cleanliness as needed via minor landscaping, cleaning, etc To safely and efficiently use ladders and other equipment as required To use handy tools such as wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers, drills, etc as required To maintain all facilities and equipment in a safe and secure condition. To aid in repairs, installations, safety assessments, and removal of equipment, items, and building features To inform the Maintenance Operator of any damage, faults, or necessary repairs to the property and equipment of To report major faults to approved service contractors and ensure the necessary, safe repairs subject to the approval of the Maintenance Operator. To be available for routine inspections carried out by the Maintenance Operator, all Statutory Agencies and the Annual Service Inspections carried out by the approved service contractors, and to follow up and report on their findings and recommendations. To assist in the engaging of service contractors, building contractors and their subcontractors as directed by the Maintenance Operator or designate To follow directives from the Maintenance Operator or designate to issue maintenance repair orders to the approved service contractors and to retain a record of repair work completed. To assist the maintenance operator in preparing a list of outstanding work orders, along with work orders referred to service contractors, for weekly review by the Maintenance Operator, or designate. To assist the maintenance operator in keeping a detailed inventory of maintenance supplies and equipment and to report discrepancies to the Maintenance Operator, or designate, immediately upon discovery. To be responsible for the security and safe storage of all maintenance equipment and supplies. To post the required ‘Warning’ notices informing co-workers and clients of equipment failure or property hazards as directed by the Maintenance Operator To maintain the property and grounds in a clean and safe condition, free from all hazards (i.e. snow removal, pressure wash exterior of building, etc.) To offer training to co-workers and volunteers on the correct operation of machinery and equipment provided. To maintain the confidentiality and ethical standards of Good Shepherd Ministries at all times. To assist the Maintenance Operator in his/her duties and assume responsibility as required To perform any other job-related task that may from time to time be assigned by the Maintenance Operator or designate.

Skill, Nature and Scope: Actively practices the Mission, Vision and Values of Good Shepherd Ministries. Experience in property maintenance acquired through a vocational qualification or equivalent work-related experience. Experience and familiarity with ‘handy tools’ such as wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers, drills, etc Ability to safely and efficiently use ladders, platforms, and other equipment with proficiency and following health and safety standards Ability to safely and efficiently lift up to 25kg of materials, tools, equipment, etc unassisted Comfortable with performing essential maintenance and cleaning tasks as required such as bathroom maintenance and outdoor repairs Organizational skills to prioritize workload and a demonstrated ability to provide direction and supervision to contractors. Excellent written communication skills to prepare written reports and instructions, order supplies, obtain job or equipment quotations, prepare inspection or maintenance reports and maintain Good Shepherd Ministries required documentation. A sound knowledge in workplace safety and hazardous materials/chemicals through experience and/or related courses (e.g. WHMIS) is essential as well as CPR First Aid acquired through a recognized program. Willing and capable of wearing safety or protective equipment such as safety shoes, eyewear, gloves, etc when required Effective written communication and interpersonal skills to maintain teamwork with the ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills to encourage and maintain teamwork and communicate with service engineers, contractors or sub-contractors and deal effectively with a difficult client group are necessary.
