About the role

Executive Director Patients for Patient Safety Canada (PFPSC)

The ideal candidate possesses a strong understanding of patient safety and can clearly articulate a vision and strategic plan for advancing patient safety across Canada. They demonstrate exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities, as well as outstanding interpersonal skills. The successful candidate has a proven ability to foster positive and meaningful experiences when working with volunteers. They value and respect the perspectives of patients and families and have demonstrated a commitment to ensuring that patients, families, and essential care partners are fully engaged in all aspects of the healthcare system. In addition, the candidate has a strong track record in project management and is proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications. The successful candidate will possess the skills, experience, and leadership capabilities required to fulfill the following responsibilities:

Executive Leadership & Strategic Planning • Provide strategic leadership and direction to design and deliver initiatives that advance the patient safety mission of PFPSC. • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop, refine, and implement PFPSC’s strategic priorities, including researching and presenting recommendations and proposals for Board consideration. • Conduct organizational planning and ensure alignment between strategic priorities, operational activities, and patient safety goals. • Conduct environmental scans and literature reviews to identify emerging trends, best practices, and opportunities that support PFPSC’s strategic planning and patient safety initiatives.

Member Engagement & Support • Maintain regular communication with PFPSC members to ensure they are informed, engaged, and able to contribute to organizational priorities and activities. • Seek and incorporates member feedback to strengthen member engagement and support the recruitment of new members. • In partnership with the Membership Working Group, monitor and coordinate requests for member participation in external and organizational activities. • Support PFPSC Working Groups by attending meetings as appropriate and providing information, guidance, and advice upon request.

Operational Management & Governance • Provide overall operational and administrative leadership of PFPSC, in collaboration with the Board of Directors and committees, including: o Program and services oversight (i.e. working groups and general organization activities. o Policy implementation. o Financial and risk management. o Budget development and monitoring. o Human resources management. o Compliance with PFPSC bylaws and applicable legislation. o Evaluation of programs/services aligned with organization performance • 2026–2027 Priority: work with board to secure operational funding, sufficient to support PFPSC activities through at least the 2027–2028 fiscal year.

Board Relations & Organizational Reporting • Maintain regular communication with the Board of Directors through reports, updates, recommendations, and summaries of member feedback. • Support informed Board decision-making by providing timely information, analysis, and operational updates.

Stakeholder Relations & External Representation • Represent PFPSC and its Board at meetings, conferences, and other stakeholder forums. • Work with board to build and sustain purposeful partnerships and collaborations with healthcare organizations, stakeholders, and governments to advance patient safety initiatives and increase PFPSC’s participation and influence.

Communications & Public Awareness • Work with the Communications Committee and website provider to maintain and enhance PFPSC’s website and social media presence. • Work with the Communications Committee to develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy to engage the public, partners, and other external stakeholders.

Terms of Position: • Person to start immediately or as soon as possible • Part time, working remotely from a home office • Administrative support will be provided • Access to additional resources will be supported • One-year fixed term contract, with possibility of renewal • Annual budget for this role is $70,000 (including GST); depending on the successful candidate’s availability and work requirements, the hourly time commitment (and corresponding hourly rate) can vary • Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends to meet the needs of the organization. • Unpaid vacation considered upon request. Concurrent weeks to be capped at two (2) weeks
