About the role

One of six units with the Division of Student Affairs, Vikes Athletics and Recreation (ATRS) offers eight high performance varsity sport programs (soccer, rugby, basketball, and field-hockey, cross country/track, rowing, swimming and golf), competitive intramural and sport clubs, and a broad array of health and wellness programs to the university and broader community. As a sub-brand of the University, the Vikes programs have a high profile in the greater Victoria community, through partnerships, community programming, alumni outreach and events. Athletics and Recreation’s commitment to excellence in sport, health and wellness, and customer service make it a key contributor to student success on campus, and the department plays a critical role in student recruitment and retention.

Under the direction of the Health & Fitness Coordinator, the Health & Fitness Assistant aids in the implementation of services offered through the Vikes Recreation Health and Fitness operation. This area includes Group Fitness classes, Health and Fitness registered programs, Personal Training and ongoing supervision of the Fitness Weight Centre. The Health and Fitness Assistant provides full-time support in supervising the day-to-day operations and serves as the first point of contact in providing excellent customer service for our CARSA community. The Health and Fitness Assistant is a self-motivated individual who assists with scheduling, hiring and training student staff and other, maintaining efficient workflow throughout the year.

Our Fitness and Weight Centre is staffed seven days a week, from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm, requiring this position to have flexibility to work evenings and weekends according to operational requirements. As well, our group fitness and health and fitness programs operate throughout business hours mentioned and such, be flexible to meet operational needs.

Experience

Must have a minimum of two (2) years of recent experience in a similar position, preferably in a post-secondary or institutional environment or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Related Work Experience Should Include

Scheduling and coordinating Using databases, spreadsheets, payroll and data entry

Preference Will Be Given To Applicants With

Experience with UVic information systems Experience using Fusion Living Software

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Excellent organizational skills including attention to detail, time management, and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment Exceptional administrative skills including meeting and calendar coordination Strong communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to relate well and work effectively within a team environment, as well as the larger UVic community and external agencies Experience in effectively maintaining confidentiality of highly personal and sensitive information Ability to work independently with limited supervision and resolve tasks and/or problems by exercising judgement and innovation, and employing critical thinking and/or analysis Ability to work under pressure and meet strict and often emergent deadlines Ability to exercise initiative, good judgement, tact, and diplomacy Demonstrated commitment to valuing the principles of truth, reconciliation and respect, equity diversity and inclusion, and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment Proficiency with computer applications (i.e. MS-Office Suite, Adobe Create Suite, content management systems).

Specialized Knowledge/Education

Secondary school graduation or equivalent.
