Position Summary

Temporary Part-Time Support Staff, new contract position (August 31, 2026 – May 9, 2027)

The Recreation Attendant is responsible for overseeing recreational programs and facilities during peak student engagement hours. As an active member of the Athletics and Recreation team, the successful candidate will ensure programming meets the needs of Conestoga students, employees, and community members. The attendant provides guidance to part-time recreation and facility student staff, shares technical knowledge of sports equipment and facilities, de-escalates intramural and recreational programming, and performs customer service and maintenance duties.

Successful candidates will be required to conduct work on-site at the Doon campus, located at 299 Doon Valley Dr. in Kitchener. The Recreation Attendant will be scheduled up to 16 hours, Monday through Sunday, between 7:00 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. Scheduled hours may vary based on event schedules and facility operating hours.

Responsibilities

Regularly checks activity schedule (Fusion Innosoft) to prepare for Recreation Centre programming before each shift Works with the student maintenance and recreation team to complete set-up requirements Liaises with coaches and varsity team personnel to ensure their equipment and set-up needs are satisfied Follows daily facility maintenance requirements as prepared by supervisor and uses best practices to sweep, dust, mop and wash programming areas (gymnasium floors and seating, running track, squash courts, multi-purpose rooms, fitness centre, etc.) Identifies and addresses minor facility repairs and equipment replacements as needed while conducting regular inventories and inspections Performs laundry duties as needed to support the cleaning of varsity uniforms, including soaking, washing, drying and hanging uniforms Completes work orders for supervisor to review prior to sending to facilities In alignment with facilities and housekeeping, performs seasonal maintenance requirements, including emergency exit snow removal and external garbage pick up Monitors laundry chemicals and flags re-ordering requirements for supervisor Monitors the laundry drainage area for clogging – removes debris from drain area twice a week Monitors and changes garbage bags as needed when cleaners are not scheduled to work Provides leadership to student staff when immediate direction is needed Supports facilitation of programming in collaboration with Recreation Coordinator De-escalates and controls situations when concerns arise with student recreational participants Contacts and leads communication with department administrators regarding issues or concerns raised during evening and weekend hours Familiarizes self with recreational programming, intramural policies and rules, student staff job descriptions to ensure tasks are being met Informs users of program schedules and supports the promotion of programming when appropriate Directs patrons and user groups to areas within the recreation centre as required Assists rental groups with facility or equipment-related inquiries Provides critical backup to front-of-house services to cover lunch breaks or emergencies Patrols the building for security purposes and to ensure member satisfaction Working with the supervisor, supports the facilitation of regular student maintenance training as it relates to equipment setup and maintenance Support the development of training modules, materials and resources for seasonal training sessions

Qualifications

A two-year diploma in Recreation and Leisure, Facility Management, Recreation and Business, Fitness and Health Promotion, Sport Management, or a related field is required Minimum one year of practical experience in a similar recreational or customer service environment is required Knowledge of recreation and sport equipment, including proper set-up, maintenance, and safety requirements (e.g., courts, nets, fitness equipment, and multipurpose spaces) Ability to monitor facility conditions, identify maintenance or safety concerns, and take appropriate action or escalate as required Demonstrated attention to detail, particularly in maintaining cleanliness standards, completing inspections, and tracking inventories Demonstrated experience supporting recreational programming, events, or facility operations, including equipment set-up and tear-down
