About the role

General Description of the Position

Working within a team-based environment, the Human Resources Generalist supports the effective delivery of Human Resources services across the organization. This role provides day-to-day HR support to employees, supervisors, and leadership while assisting with employee relations, recruitment, onboarding, training, benefits administration, health and safety, and HR compliance initiatives.

The Human Resources Generalist acts as a trusted resource for employees and leaders by providing guidance on HR policies, procedures, and employment-related matters. The role focuses on building positive employee relationships, improving HR processes, and supporting a strong workplace culture. This position will also provide backup support for payroll administration as required.

The ideal candidate is a collaborative and approachable HR professional with strong communication skills and a passion for supporting employees and leaders. They are organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

The successful candidate will have experience in employee relations, recruitment, HR administration, and preferably a unionized manufacturing environment. They will demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, sound judgment, confidentiality, and the ability to build positive relationships throughout the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Human Resources Administration

  • Maintain accurate employee files, HR records, and documentation. 
  • Respond to employee and supervisor inquiries related to HR policies, procedures, and employment matters. 
  • Prepare employee communications, including postings, notices, and HR announcements. 
  • Assist with updating and maintaining HR policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legislation and company practices. 
  • Prepare HR reports and support ongoing HR initiatives and projects. 

Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Coordinate full-cycle recruitment for hourly and salaried positions as required. 
  • Prepare job postings, review resumes, schedule interviews, and communicate with candidates. 
  • Support hiring decisions and ensure recruitment practices align with company policies and collective agreement requirements. 
  • Prepare onboarding documentation and coordinate new employee orientation. 
  • Support recruitment and retention initiatives to meet business needs. 

Employee & Labour Relations

  • Provide day-to-day HR support and guidance to employees and supervisors. 
  • Assist with attendance management, performance management, investigations, corrective actions, and conflict resolution. 
  • Support positive labour relations through participation in union/management meetings and grievance processes. 
  • Assist with the interpretation and administration of the collective agreement. 
  • Support employee engagement initiatives and promote a positive workplace culture. 

Health, Safety & Disability Management

  • Support WSIB claim administration and return-to-work programs. 
  • Coordinate employee accommodations and modified work arrangements. 
  • Maintain health and safety training records and assist with compliance requirements. 
  • Support Joint Health and Safety Committee activities as required. 

Training & Development

  • Maintain employee training records and certification tracking. 
  • Coordinate internal and external training programs. 
  • Support onboarding, employee development, and continuous learning initiatives. 

Compensation, Benefits & HR Systems

  • Administer employee benefit programs, including enrollments, changes, and terminations. 
  • Support short-term disability administration and communication with benefit providers. 
  • Maintain employee information within HR systems and ensure data accuracy. 
  • Assist with pension administration and employee communications. 

Payroll Support

  • Provide backup support for payroll processing during absences or peak periods. 
  • Review timekeeping records and assist with payroll-related inquiries. 
  • Support payroll audits, reporting, and year-end activities as required. 

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve HR processes, systems, and employee services. 
  • Participate in HR projects and organizational initiatives. 
  • Support initiatives that improve employee experience, engagement, and operational effectiveness.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field. 
  • CHRP designation or working toward designation considered an asset. 
  • 5+ years of progressive Human Resources experience, preferably in a manufacturing or operational environment. 
  • Experience supporting a unionized workforce and knowledge of collective agreements, labour relations, and progressive discipline practices. 
  • Strong understanding of Ontario employment legislation, including the Employment Standards Act, Human Rights Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and WSIB requirements. 
  • Experience with recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, and HR administration. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships with employees, supervisors, and leadership. 
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and experience with HRIS systems (ADP Workforce Now considered an asset). 
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team. 
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in HR documentation and processes.
