PROFILE

We are seeking an experienced, proactive, and detail-oriented Law Clerk to join our Environmental Law team. This role supports lawyers on a broad range of environmental, municipal, regulatory, and litigation matters. The successful candidate is an organized professional who can work independently and in groups, adapt to changing demands to meet deadlines, and exercise sound judgment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Independently manage assigned files from opening to closing by reviewing case facts, identifying applicable legislation, regulations and procedural requirements, preparing initial documentation, maintaining matter plans, budgets and timelines, and ensuring all critical deadlines are identified and met.
  • Draft, revise and manage a wide range of legal documents, including pleadings, affidavits, motions, contracts, agreements, correspondence, court forms, tribunal filings, memoranda, briefing materials and document books.
  • Prepare, coordinate, file and serve court and tribunal documents in accordance with applicable legislation, court rules, practice directions and electronic filing requirements, while supporting lawyers throughout all stages of litigation, regulatory proceedings, hearings, appeals, examinations for discovery, mediations and closings.
  • Organize, maintain and administer electronic and physical file records, document management systems and litigation databases, including Relativity, Summation, CaseLogistix, Firmex or similar platforms. Coordinate document productions, due diligence projects and secure document repositories, ensuring key documents are identified and readily accessible.
  • Conduct legal, factual and due diligence research, including case law, legislation, regulatory requirements, environmental and mining searches, Freedom of Information requests, Information and Privacy Commissioner appeal processes, and other government or public record searches. Analyze findings and prepare summaries and reports for lawyer review.
  • Communicate professionally with clients, opposing counsel, courts, tribunals, government agencies, experts, consultants and other service providers. Provide clients with timely file updates and respond to inquiries within the scope of assigned authority.
  • Other clerk duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Law Clerk/Paralegal diploma or equivalent legal education.
  • Candidates must have prior litigation experience. Experience with Ontario and/or Federal court procedures, Environmental, Municipal, Administrative, or Regulatory Law are considered strong assets.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct legal research and analyze legislation, case law, legal documents and procedural requirements with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated interest and ability to adapt to changing demands and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Proven ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment, exercising sound judgment, professionalism and discretion.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft 365 (Word, Outlook, Excel and Teams), together with experience using legal technology, document management systems and litigation support platforms, including ACL, Relativity, Summation, CaseLogistix, Firmex or comparable applications.

The starting range for this role is $93,000 to $130,000. Starting salary will be determined based on an applicant’s individual skills, competencies and unique qualifications. Gowling WLG employees have the potential to exceed this range based on tenure and performance.
