The Planning department of the Climate Action, Planning and Development Services division has an opportunity for qualified individuals to apply for the position of Planning Technician. Reporting to the Manager of Development Planning, this position offers 72 hours bi-weekly starting as soon as possible.

The Planning Technician will process less complex development applications, coordinate statutory notices for the department, provide research, data collection, review and analysis, respond to public inquiries, prepare and present reports to Council and other committees and support development planning processes. 

Qualified candidates possess a bachelor’s degree in urban or regional planning or a related discipline (Urban design, Landscape Architecture or Geography), supplemented by 1-3 years of experience in a professional planning role. Experience working as a research assistant, internship, and/or related volunteer work may be considered. Candidates must be able to read maps and plans and review, analyze and make recommendations on development applications including development variance permit, delegated development permit, sign permit, and business licence. Candidates must also have a strong ability to conduct research, compile data, analyze information and make recommendations, and be proficient with Microsoft 365 with the ability to learn new and changing technology. Knowledge of the Whistler resort community, municipal bylaws and regulations, and community engagement techniques are assets. 

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work independently, effectively manage several files and projects at once, exercise critical thinking, and make sound recommendations through clearly articulated written and oral presentations. In addition, the ability to interact effectively, courteously, and professionally with the public, development planning applicants and other municipal staff is essential. The successful candidate demonstrates commitment to promoting a diverse and equitable workplace while contributing to a positive team environment. The starting wage for this job position is $44.24 per hour.

As a requirement of the position, the successful applicant must hold a valid BC class 5 driver’s license and must provide a satisfactory driver’s abstract prior to beginning employment.
