Access Services
Access Services ensures that the state’s archival resources are accessible to the people and government of Victoria by:
providing Reading Room services and online access to our collection preserving archives within their region of origin and ensuring equality of access for regional communities providing culturally appropriate services, procedures and tools to enhance access by Koorie communities creating a range of exhibitions, publications and outreach activities.
Government Services
Government Services Set Recordkeeping Standards For The Victorian Government To Create And Preserve Better Records. Government Services Assist Government Agencies With Compliance By
providing best practice records management and archiving advice, standards and specifications identifying which Victorian public records are to be kept and their retention period taking into custody and preserving records identified as permanent.
Corporate Services
Corporate Services provides strategic advice and direction about records and information management, information and communication technology, communications and online engagement, people and culture, finance and facilities operation.
Material in the Public Record Office Victoria archival collection contains words and descriptions that reflect attitudes and government policies at different times which may be insensitive and upsetting
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples should be aware the collection and website may contain images, voices and names of deceased persons.
PROV provides advice to researchers wishing to access, publish or re-use records about Aboriginal Peoples

About Public Record Office Victoria
Public Record Office Victoria is the archive of State and Local Governments of Victoria. We hold approximately 100kms of records from 1836 to today, which we manage for use by the Government and people of Victoria. We set mandatory recordkeeping standards and provide support and advice on recordkeeping to state and local government. We also provide researcher services, an awards and grants program, public programming and outreach.
The Collection includes memories of events and decisions great and small that have shaped the history of the Colony and State of Victoria, as well as records of immigration and shipping, criminal trials and prisons, premiers and governors, royal commissions, boards of inquiry, wills and probates and more.
Established under the Public Records Act 1973, Public Record Office Victoria’s objectives as set out in the Act are to:
•Issue standards regulating the creation, maintenance and security of public records including the selection and disposal of public records not worthy of preservation •Advise and assist agencies in achieving compliance with issued standards •Preserve public records of permanent value as the state archives •Ensure that the archives are accessible to the Government and the people of Victoria. The Public Records Act 1973 also established the Public Records Advisory Council to advise the Minister on administration of the Act and to promote co-operation between Public Record Office Victoria and other government agencies.
Public Record Office Victoria is an agency of the Department of Premier and Cabinet.
