Accessibility Services Assistant

Reporting to the Department Head, Student Access and Support, and utilizing a service excellence approach, this position provides support to Disability Services within the Student Access and Support Department. This individual will provide a supportive environment for the students, possessing empathy and understanding of their disabilities and concerns. This includes a key role in scheduling, organizing and supervising accommodated exams on various campuses for students with disabilities in a professional and confidential manner. Other duties include: working closely with Disability Service Coordinators to provide clerical, scheduling, technical, word processing and invigilation support to those students and providing clerical/administrative support to Disability Coordinators.

NOTE: This position requires regular travel between the Tenth Street and Silver King campuses in Nelson.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides support to students with disabilities including:
    • recording and scanning material for students;
    • corresponding on related matters with students and instructors;
    • booking appropriate examination rooms;
    • scheduling and organizing invigilation for students’ exams;
    • supervising and scribing exams for students;
    • providing training to students on specialty programs;
    • providing overall support in accordance with the relevant College policy; and
    • assisting students in addressing specific individual issues.
  • Provides administrative and clerical support to the Disability Coordinators including:
    • recording and inputting invigilation statistics;
    • creating and updating forms for Disability Coordinators;
    • compiling intake folders for Disability Coordinators;
    • maintaining the departmental filing system;
    • maintaining and updating the Disability Services website;
    • researching and ordering specialty adaptive software;
    • providing clerical support to Disability Coordinators;
    • participating in student orientations, parent sessions and presentations to faculty as required;
    • taking and transcribing meeting minutes of students and Coordinators, parents and others; and
    • submitting and tracking BC College & Institute Library Services (CILS) requests.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Department Head

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of College policies and procedures related to Student Access and Support
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • A high degree of sensitivity and confidentiality regarding the needs of students with disabilities
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to set priorities when encountering conflicting demands
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Strong computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, data base software and student records database (SRS).
  • Proficiency in specialty software including Dragon Naturally Speaking, Zoomtext 7, Text-help Gold, Inspiration 6, Text Allowed, and Jaws is required.
  • Knowledge of specialty software/hardware including Daisy, E-text, Kurzweil 3000, Brail reader is highly recommended.
  • Knowledge of the Ministry of Advanced Education, Assistive Technology of BC (AT-BC) and CILS protocol and services is highly recommended
  • Keyboarding at 60 wpm
  • Excellent attention to detail

Education and Experience

  • High School graduation
  • Completion of a Human Services program is required
  • 2 years of experience in a student services role working with students with disabilities
  • 1 - 2 years of general office experience

This is a regular, part-time (60%) position, commencing July 15, 2026. Salary will be Pay Grade 7, $32.09 per hour in accordance with the PPWC Collective Agreement.
