Role Description The Curator & Director of Operations is a full-time, on-site role based in East Coulee, AB, responsible for overseeing both collections care and day-to-day site operations. This role develops and implements interpretive plans, designs and updates exhibits, and ensures that artifacts and archival materials are preserved according to museum and heritage standards. The Curator & Director of Operations coordinates seasonal staff recruitment , supports frontline visitor services, and monitors facility needs across the site. The position manages budgets related to programs and operations, contributes to grant writing and reporting, and works with community partners to deliver educational programs, tours, and special events. Regular tasks include supervising team members, refining operational procedures, gathering visitor feedback, and aligning site activities with Atlas Coal Mine’s mission and strategic goals. Qualifications Background in museum studies, heritage management, history, archaeology, or a related field, with knowledge of collections management and interpretive best practices. Experience in operations management, including workflow coordination, budgeting, and basic facility oversight in a museum, historic site, or tourism setting. Strong skills in research, writing, and exhibit development, with the ability to translate complex historical content into engaging, accessible materials for diverse audiences. Proficiency in visitor services and public programming, including tour development, educational program delivery, and community or stakeholder engagement. Demonstrated leadership and team management abilities, including training staff, fostering a respectful workplace, and supporting safe on-site operations. Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with capacity to handle multiple projects, meet deadlines, and adapt to seasonal and operational demands. Comfort with digital tools for collections documentation, scheduling, communications, and basic marketing or social media outreach. Understanding of workplace health and safety practices, especially in outdoor, industrial-heritage, or multi-building sites. Ability to work on-site in East Coulee, AB, including some weekends, holidays, and peak tourist season hours. Prior experience in Canadian heritage institutions, historic sites, or cultural tourism is an asset.
