This competition is to fill one (1) full-time 1-year term, anticipatory permanent position working 75 hour bi-weekly.

Who we are…

As the responsible stewards of public funds, the Department of Finance partners to ensure value for money in the delivery of programs and services for Yukoners. The Department of Finance serves as the territory's statistical body and develops the territorial budget, corresponding supplementary budgets and Public Accounts for the territory. It is also responsible for negotiating, coordinating and representing Yukon on inter-governmental financial matters with other jurisdictions. In its capacity as a central agency, the department works with all areas of government in the creation of their annual departmental budgets and in processing operational accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.

The Tax Administration Branch is responsible for the enforcement of compliance under the Tobacco Tax Act, Fuel Oil Tax Act, and the Insurance Premium Tax Act.

The opportunity…

Reporting to the Director, Tax Administration, the Tax Compliance Officer is responsible for collecting and processing applications for licenses, commodity tax returns, ensuring accuracy and adherence to various Commodity Acts and related regulations.

Day-to-day responsibilities will involve administering and enforcing relevant commodity tax statutes, assisting in site inspections as required, and performing desk reviews to ensure compliance with Yukon commodity tax legislation. You'll have the opportunity to analyze accounts, investigate anomalies, and report findings to senior officers for further action. The duties include effective communication (verbal and written) with the tax collectors and recommending corrective actions to the Director.

We are looking for an individual who has strong organizational and time management skills and is comfortable working independently in a high volume, fast-paced environment with critical deadlines. You should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, always remaining professional and tactful during difficult situations.

  • Post-secondary certificate, diploma or degree in finance, financial administration or equivalent.
  • Experience with the use of computer software for data entry and analysis.
  • Experience providing efficient customer service and responding to client correspondence, preferably with confidential information.
  • Experience in documenting findings, preparing reports, and making recommendations to senior management.
  • Experience interpreting and applying legislation would be considered an asset.

Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.

Additional information

Conditions of Employment:

Security Clearance to be obtained within 30 days from hire.

Job requirements:

Willingness to travel throughout Yukon as required.
