Reporting Relationship: Director of Care

Candidates are invited to apply for the above Full-Time, Permanent position of Assistant Director of Care (ADOC)

at Chippawa Creek at Bella Care Residence; a 160-bed long-term care facility, located in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Complexity and Scope of the Position

Reporting to the Director of Care (DOC), the ADOC is accountable for assisting with the management of all aspects of nursing care within the facility to ensure quality resident care through the effective and efficient delivery of established standards within legislative and budgetary requirements.


  • Assists the DOC in the implementation and evaluation of the Nursing Department quality improvement initiatives, risk management systems, data collection and analysis, report writing and procedural updates.
  • Assists in the coordination and implementation of best practice and risk management initiatives related to resident care (i.e. falls, restraint use, wound management, Infection Control).
  • Effectively manages the ordering and utilization of nursing supplies.
  • Maintains a system of care assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation at the resident and unit program level that maximizes staff resources and contributes to our interdisciplinary team approach to resident care.
  • Effectively supports the RAI-MDS program.
  • Maintains an active presence in the Resident Home Areas mentoring staff, while overseeing the provision of quality resident care.
  • Assists with investigative and corrective actions related to Occupational Health and Safety; assists in creating and monitoring modified work programs for nursing personnel.
  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Care on special projects, reviews, and other duties as may be assigned.
  • Assists in the management and investigation of incidents that result in a Critical Incidents or Mandatory reports to the Ministry of Health.
  • Will be a lead in the provision of education to staff in the home including new hires, annual education and education around special needs or new practices.
  • Will take a lead in the hiring of new staff including RNs, RPNs and PSWs.
  • Will act as a liaison with Colleges/Universities for student placements within the home.
  • Shares in the on-call process, in the home, alongside the DOC to field calls from the RNs after hours.
  • Participates in the on-call process of the home and will be required to come in for one day over the weekend (taking a day off during the week) approximately 4-5 times per year; subject to change depending on the amount of managers taking on-call.
  • In the event that the home is short an RN in the facility, ADOC may be required to cover after hour shifts as it is a MOH requirement to have an RN in the facility 24 hours a day; this will only be when all other means of replacement have been exhausted.
  • Assumes responsibility for the Nursing Department in the Director of Care’s absence.


  • Registered Nurse; BScN preferred.
  • Registration with College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in Long Term Care; previous management experience an asset.
  • Current knowledge of clinical issues for geriatric residents, infection control, principles of adult education and quality improvement.
  • Knowledge of RAI MDS.
  • Demonstrated superior leadership and organizational skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, computerized resident care and assessment programs.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, current nursing and healthcare practices.
  • Demonstrates concern and interest in providing quality care and service to residents.
